Recover a Non-booting Linux System

I came across this this morning, I have had this problem several times, i thought mayby others could use this information also.

Ok, inevitably, it will come to pass that if you are testing out Alpha Releases, you will experience at least one time in your life where the system will not boot.

Recently, while working on Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10), I did an update an rebooted into a non functional system. Apparently just before freeze for Alpha 6, there were some uploads which caused the build systems to not completely build all the necessary packages. Hence I had a partial update.

Anyway, things seem to be resolved now, so on to recovery. I am documenting this mostly so I remember how to do it again (copy/paste is your friend) and maybe it will be useful to others.

First, you need a live CD/DVD/USB running your favorite Linux. In my case, it's Kubuntu. I used my usb-creator-kde to make a live USB from a known working and recent release.

After booting into your live environment, you need to open a terminal and switch to mount your partitions under /mnt.

To determine the partitions, you can use fdisk as follows:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xd88dfd16

sdb is my USB drive and sda is my HDD. sda1 is /boot, sda6 is / and sda7 is home. Yours will likely be different.

After you figure out your partitions, you will mount them as follows:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/home

Verify everything looks correct before proceeding (i.e. you got the partitions correct and mounted in the correct places).

Next, you need to take care of /proc and /dev as follows:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev

Ok, now you have setup your chroot environment, and may change into it:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo chroot /mnt

At this point, you should be able to update your system, add/remove packages using apt-get, or edit any files you need to fix the system.

In my case, a simple apt-get update && apt-get upgrade will fix things.

After making your changes you need to exit the chroot and unmount the partitions in the reverse order.

Now you should be able to safely exit the live system and reboot.

Making money isn’t usually a lot of fun–jobs are often the common person’s least favorite aspect of their life. You can make residual income from home, however, and being your own boss might make that part of your life a little more pleasant. Just understand that working from home is still work, and that anyone who says otherwise probably has something devious up their sleeve.

Most people would define a residual income opportunity as one where you earn multiple commissions over time after the first initial effort or sale. This generally means that after you are responsible for a sale, any future sales or payments from that same customer still earn you a commission. If you can work this system you can make more and more money over time.

Many of the popular residual income programs operate like the one I described above. You find an affiliate site or company that wants you to recommend or advertise their product. You use your web presence to make that recommendation and hope to get the income rolling in. You continue to get commissions as long as the customers stay subscribed to a service or as they make future purchases from the same site.

If you are looking for affiliate programs, there are many sites and directories on the web that can help you–just search for them. If you are looking for affiliates that offer subscription services, the gambling, dating and adult sites are the type of services that often offer as residual affiliate program. Affiliates that offer residual income from return sales are a diverse group, but companies that sell health products, clothing, or jewelry are common on the list of those that offer this type of commission.

If a certain affiliate does catch your eye, make sure you do your research and read all their documentation before you sign on to any program. If the affiliate is offering too much for too little in return, you are likely looking at a scam. Look into what people are saying about the affiliate, and don’t feel like you have to sign up for anything unless you are happy with the scheme and payouts.

Another method of making residual income besides through recommending affiliate sites is through writing online content. Many Q&A sites will offer you a commission for articles you write for them, either through their advertising or sometimes by how often your article is read. You can even market your own content like through an eBook, but in these cases you are doing traditional marketing, often, and not the residual kind.

However you plan to make your money, you will benefit from having your own web presence with plenty of traffic so you have a lot of people to refer and make recommendations to. If you don’t have your own site or online marketing program, you should think about how you plan to build this up (unless you are thinking about making content for an established website). It would serve you well to become familiar with all of the online marketing techniques.

If you are willing to treat a home job like a real job, a home-based residual income scheme might work for you and pay off sometime down the road. Just go for it headstrong with a little bit of wisdom and planning.
